What goes wrong with sewer laterals

How we diagnose a sewer line

Symptoms first: backups at the lowest drain, gurgling, a wet or sunken strip of lawn, or a smell outdoors. Then location. We trace the line from the cleanout or the foundation, identify the depth and the material, and find the failure point. If the line runs near gas, electric or fiber, we expose the crossing with hydrovac rather than a bucket.

Repair or replace

A single failed joint, a root intrusion at one point, or a crushed section can be spot repaired: dig, cut out the bad section, install new PVC with proper couplings, backfill and restore. If the line is clay or Orangeburg and has failed once, it will fail again somewhere else. In that case we recommend full replacement from the house to the main or the septic tank, and we say so in the quote rather than selling you a repair every two years.

What a sewer line job looks like

Dig Safe marks, then excavation along the line with a mini or full-size excavator. New SDR 35 PVC laid to grade on a stone bed, connected with the right transition couplings at each end, inspected where the town requires it, backfilled in lifts and compacted. Lawn, gravel or pavement restored. Most residential replacements are a one to two day job.
